Santa Paula Theatre Center Kicks off New Season

Ventura 12February 2019 --  The Santa Paula Theatre Center kicks off a tremendously interesting 2019 theatre season with Stephen Karam’s Tony Award winning The Humans starting at the beginning of February and running until 10 March.  The Humans is a multi-leveled, complex sprawl of a play constructed around a Yonkers family’s Thanksgiving dinner at a daughter’s “walk down” ground-floor apartment in contemporary lower Manhattan.

This SPTC season features five strong dramas by some of our best playwrights, including Edward Albee’s Seascape, and what some feel is Neil Simon’s greatest play, Lost in Yonkers. If there were ever a time to get a season ticket for the entire run of one of our best local community theatres, this is the time to do it.

Shepard's True West at SPTC

We have passed the one year anniversary of the death of one of America's greatest playwrights, Sam Shepard, and Santa Paula Theatre Company has appropriately commemorated the moment by producing one of his best plays, True West. In spite of its complexities and the murkiness of its depths, True West may be Shepard's most accessible and funniest play.

Putting Fashion in Its Place, an Interview with Rhonda P. Hill

Rhonda P Hill VIP Guest LA Fashion Week EDGExpocom

The power of fashion lies in its ability to transform identity and culture.” – Rhonda P. Hill

There is a new generation of designers that are fed up with fast and cheap fashion, over the top runway shows dominated by luxury brands, and the industry's superficial characteristics. And the big dirty little secret of that industry is that it is polluting the environment. Clothing and textiles are one of the largest polluting industries on the planet, right up there with oil. This new generation of designers believes brand identity is nothing without purpose. They stand their ground on creativity, innovation, and building a collection with meaning. "They are a courageous breed of designers who are going against the commercialized trend of 'more is more' and giving artistic value, a cultural face, and environmental consciousness to fashion", says Rhonda P. Hill.

33078572Back-to-school season is an exciting time for both students and parents, but it can be a stressful time as well. Grilling makes summer meals a snap.

32294104 It’s summertime, and temperatures are on the rise. Whether relaxing at the pool, cheering for a favorite team or just hanging out with family and friends, keeping cool is at the top of the list. Nothing fancy needed — with a hat or cap to keep the sun away from the eyes, an umbrella for a bit of shade and a cold bunch of California grapes straight from the fridge or cooler, it is easy to take the sizzle out of hot summer days.

When it’s time to entertain, the grill can be a host’s best friend by making it a breeze to cook and relax outside at the same time. Grilled Flank Steak with Southwest Corn and Grape Salad is guaranteed to please the senses with its tasty flavors; beautiful color medley from red and green grapes, avocado and corn; and variety of pleasing textures.

Farmers' Markets of the 805 Ventura County Edition

dreamstime xs 70048416
What is a Farmer Market?
Merriam- Webster defines it as "a market at which local farmers sell their agricultural products directly to consumers".
Did you also know that the first farmers' market opened in 1634 in Boston, Massachusetts, but one can trace farmers' markets back 5000 years to Egypt where farmers along the Nile would gather and sell their fresh produce. In ancient times farmers' markets served as the historical-version of grocery stores.

Mark Bradford at Hauser & Wirth, Los Angeles
Mark Bradford's solo exhibition "New Works" at Hauser & Wirth's magnificiently raw Los Angeles location is the artist's first gallery exhibition in his hometown in over 15 years. Bradford's star has been on the ascendency over the last decade, burning white hot since his "Tomorrow is Another Day" exhibition for the US Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, which will travel back to the states for a stint at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Reminders of Armageddon

The press release and poster for Yumiko Glover’s current exhibition, Pushing the Button 2,058 Times, at the Red Barn Project Space on UCSB’s Santa Barbara campus contains no PR hype or typical art marketing material, no text bragging about how the show will present ground-breaking material or test the limits of art practice in our time or any of the usual art-world bombast we see so often these days. Besides the necessary location and time information, it simply contains three quotes and their source:

Joe Cardella 1945-2018

On Thursday 15 May 2018 the Ventura arts community lost one of its long-time leaders and visionaries, Joe Cardella. Cardella had survived a difficult battle with esophageal cancer with the help of his primary caregivers, the photographer and videographer Dina Pielaet, the writer Amy Jones, and Jonell McClain. Joe had been spending time with fellow artists and friends as his strength allowed, but finally the cancer returned with new intensity.
