Christina Diaz, 805 visionary, publisher, curator, producer, Renaissance woman at large, has been crossing boundaries and bringing diverse art worlds together across the 805. Her production company, Pistol Productions, has put together a string of strong art shows, primarily in Oxnard and Ventura, bringing together artists and audiences from both towns to the benefit of all. Recent shows curated for the Stoneworks Studios, in the Ventura Avenue art zone, have repeatedly drawn large, enthusiastic, and diverse crowds.

Gregory Radionov is a quiet, unassuming, incredible artist. His watercolors are alive with color and texture and energy: each one tells a story you want to know more about. Thank goodness Radionov paints in series so the story becomes complete.

The play When We Were Young and Unafraid is sort of a local legend. Originally a smaller project workshopped in Ojai, it was eventually produced off-Broadway in 2014. Its author, Sarah Treem has gone on to do television, including writing for Game of Throne, I believe. The play itself is a well-structured, tightly written play set in 1972 about women's issues, featuring four strong women's parts and a token male role. Though set in the 70s it is more relevant today than ever.

Delightful Bob Privitt Show at the Ventura County Museum
Bob Privitt's solo show, Manipulations, brings another round of Privitt's well-known and delightful assemblages to the Ventura County Museum. Privitt has also had a solo show of his work at the Tool Room gallery at the Bell Arts Center when it was run by the museum. The current show presents a tighter, more closely related group of small sculpture/assemblages. Though color is not usually a key element in assemblage art, this show uses color very effectively to up the intensity of the visual impact to good effect.

Milo's Other Mozart Performance of a Lifetime Comes to Rubicon
Milo's Other Mozart Performance of a Lifetime Comes to Rubicon
It is to Karyl Lynn Burns and the Rubicon Theatre's great credit that they have brought Sylvia Milo's truly remarkable performance, The Other Mozart, to Ventura and the Rubicon stage for a limited engagement. This is a very special night of theatre, not to be missed by anyone even remotely interested in seeing a great performance. There is nothing quite like it available anywhere else. Rubicon brings in not only Milo but her entire original production that ran so successfully in New York and London and now tours internationally.

As a playwright, a poet, a painter, and a print-maker, Frances Spencer has firmly planted herself in both the world of art and the world of writing and drama--but there really is not much of a distinction to be found there. Spencer has lived and enjoyed her two passions thoroughly through her experimenting and conceiving and creating.

Edward Weston’s vintage classical photography took simple subjects--the naked body or a simple plant--and transformed each into something magnificent through his genius use of the camera and the darkroom. Luther Gerlach is one of many who studied Weston’s work and immediately became enthralled with his skill--both technical and visual.

Erin O’Brien Brings Your Walls to Life
Upon entering O’Brien’s studio the first item that catches your attention is a life like painting of three young boys. The painting was immaculate; the clarity was so precise that I could’ve sworn it was in HD. The beauty of this painting reminded me of another great painting done by a superb renaissance artist: “Portrait of the Artist Brother and Sisters by Sofonisba Anguissola”. Once inside I had the pleasure to make the acquaintance of O’Brien’s dear friend Betty. O’Brien was very humble, and without the help of Betty I wouldn’t have been able to pry some of O’Brien’s outstanding accomplishments out of her.

Tea with Colin Fraser

Before meeting with Colin Fraser Gray, I had the opportunity to browse through his website; www.colinfrasergray.com. The website gave me a brief overview of Colin’s work, and his accomplishments. His work is mesmerizing; it jumps out and literally shakes your soul. This was the feeling it gave me from looking at the online photo’s, to see his artwork close up in real life was an experience all its own. From my research I came across interesting facts on Colin. In 2006 Colin rocked the city of Santa Barbara with his controversial sculpture “W”. The sculpture is a toppled, upside down McDonalds sign with green arrows shot into it. A very powerful piece that, I took as a stance against the corporatism that was running rampant at the time, and the head honcho known as “Dubya”.

Two Lights at Elite's South Stage
Elite Theatre Company has brought the world premier of Brett Busang’s Two Lights to its South Stage theatre, which is their annex for showing new work, and more experimental productions. Set in the 1950s it is a tight little drama loosely based on the life of Edward Hopper, the great American painter, and his wife, who was also a painter and modeled for her husband.

I. AM. BEYOND. PALE.

Going to the tanning bed or lying on the beach without SPF is skin suicide. Harsh? YES. Skin cancer is a serious condition and the most preventable. There are so many wonderful tanning alternatives that deliver a beautiful glow and I have tried 75% of them. Skin cancer runs in my family and I have blonde hair and blue eyes - I am doomed to 'Beauty In A Bottle' when it comes to tanning. It is an important contributor to my daily self-esteem as I am sure it is for you as well. I would like to share my regiment and a few of my favorites I hope you will give a try this summer.

Santa Paula Theatre Center’s Outside Mullingar and The Elite Theatre Company’s Engaging Shaw
Though profoundly different in virtually every other aspect, the current offering of two 805 theatres, the Santa Paula Theatre Center’s Outside Mullingar and the Elite Theatre’s Engaging Shaw, feature the exact same theme: the long-term wooings of a woman for a remarkably resistant man.

Dry Shampoo....an oxymoron?
On the contrary, it is the hottest hair trend to hit the scene since exotic oils. There are so many varieties from high to lower price points and available in all salons and drugstores. Their purpose is very simple: to delay washing one's own hair. Everyday shampooing can strip the hair of its own essential oils thus creating drier and harder to manage tresses. Hairstylists have been using this products for years in many forms, as early as baby powder. They use it to create volume and extend a salon blowout, among many other uses. I CANNOT live without it. I have baby fine curly hair that tends to give out on a daily basis. The way to use MOST dry shampoos is simple - apply to roots, wait for two minutes, and brush out.
