Review: The Baby Dance Mixed

THE BABY DANCE MIXED 4
Theatre
Review
Baby Tangle
As May seems to be the month in the 805 for plays about deluded people living in trailers, Ventura's Rubicon offers us Jane Anderson's world premier of The Baby Dance: Mixed. A two act, highly charged emotional drama involving two couples, one who cannot have a baby, and a poor couple about to have one, Baby Dance: Mixed features an extraordinary cast. One highlight of this production, and a reason in itself for going to see it, is Krystle Rose Simmons' portrayal of Wanda, the pregnant woman.

Review: Mark Morris - Pepperland

Pepperland Liverpool 2017 Gareth Jones 05

Music and Dance
Sgt. Pepper at 50; Mark Morris at Eternity

Mark Morris, originally from Seattle, emerged at a time when Seattle was a hotbed for new music and emerging choreography. At that point in time, contemporary dance was also emerging from a period dominated by two generations of astoundingly creative choreographers who had tended to emphasis a stripped down visual sensibility, with rampant minimalism, and a narrowing of means in order to generate severe, instantly recognized personal styles.

April Showers Bring May Flowers- Even in Southern California!

IMG 2681

Here in the 805, we can’t always count on prolific April showers to bring May flowers. Sure, we did receive a few sprinkles this year, and there are colorful spots of wildflowers visible on our hills. But in a month known for its abundant blooms, we’re turning elsewhere to get our floral fix. We are looking at wine!

The deadly truth about parabens.

deadly parabens

Did you know up to 85% of personal care products contain parabens, including skin care, makeup, deodorant, etc. As a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, parabens prevent bacterial spoilage and extend product shelf life. Yet, research confirms that parabens disrupt hormone activity which may have an effect on fertility health as well as being the cause of breast cancer.

Review
When it rains, it pours, they say.  While we don’t get a lot of professional Shakespeare in our regional theatre, and thus one would expect there to not be much of a pool of Shakespearean actors locally, the 805 currently has two major Shakespeare plays on offer:  Rubicon’s fine King Lear, and The Ojai Art Center Theater’s Macbeth. Not only that, but both productions are trying to do something new and interesting with their productions.

Rain or Shine: Wine for Whatever the Weather

Wine Glasses List Cover 1
Spring in Southern CA is an unpredictable adventure. The sun could shine heartily, or it could hide behind a cloud cover of gloom. You might need a sweater, or you might enjoy days of sunshine on your shoulders. And true to the rhyme about April showers, you may even spot a bit of rain falling from the sky. With so many ups and downs and varying degrees each day, it’s reassuring to find a constant in wine.

King Lear at Rubicon
King Lear is one of Shakspeare’s greatest plays, some say greatest. People usually do Lear because they want to do something with it. Like Wagner’s Ring, Shakespeare’s Lear has, in modern times, become a formidable vehicle for taking a production to the limits. This usually means something in terms of either its direction, staging, or acting, or some combination or all three. Rubicon accordingly tries a lot of different things with this ambitious production in a well-worth seeing Lear.

Dance
UCSB Arts & Lectures presented Spain’s national dance company, Compañía Nacional de Danza, for its contemporary adaptation of Carmen over two nights, Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at The Granada Theatre.

While the dancers possessed great skill and gave theatrical performances, the piece as a whole fell short of a truly contemporary retelling.

Beyond The 805
LA Opera joined forces with The Joffrey Ballet to put on Orpheus and Eurydice at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Accented with beautiful singing, dynamic set pieces, and expressive dancing in inventive costumes, this performance of Orpheus and Eurydice puts a modern twist to the classic Greek tale but unfortunately gets held back from its fullest potential by a few flaws in execution.
