Spices and spirits make summer sips shine

23046229
Sweet iced tea and sangria are as much hallmarks of summer as baseball and barbecues. Cocktails are a great way to cool off when temperatures climb, or they can help heat up any celebration. If you’re looking to add some fresh excitement to seasonal beverages, spices, spirits and fun presentations can make summer sips shine.

Museum of Ventura County Seriously Mishandles Asian Pacific Exhibition

Museum of Ventura County

Tiger Huang, a long-time artist of considerable standing in the Ventura arts community presented a very special and significant installation piece at the Museum of Ventura County in conjunction with its “I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story” this last weekend [18-19 June].   It was a beautiful installation, including a well-done, mesmerizing sound-scape.

Trouble is, and this is just the beginning of the trouble, Tiger’s name and the piece itself are not  mentioned anywhere in the Museum’s website or write-up of the exhibition. This is not to mention that though it was a major piece, and certainly time-consuming to produce and install, it was only up for 48 hours.  The piece is one of the most significant installation pieces any artist has ever done in Ventura, yet,  by the time Thursday rolls around, as far as the Museum goes, it might as well not have existed at all.

Review - Oh, How Lovely Do Angels Fall

Julie Granata and Paige Lindsey WhiteReview-
Noël Coward’s Fallen Angels delivers at The Ensemble Theatre

A hilariously witty script, superb cast, first-rate production and direction, who could ask for more? A reviewer of its 1925 premier complained that the only thing wrong with Fallen Angels is the final curtain. Ditto for the Ensemble Theatre of Santa Barbara’s current production of the Noël Coward classic.

Review: What Kind of Sticks?

Luisa Katy Jarvis and Matt Parker Harrisare truly fantastick in their rolesReview-
The Fantasticks at Camarillo Skyway Playhouse

Because of its allegorical nature and the relative abstraction of its set The Fantasticks, the longest running musical in history, permits a huge range of production possibilities, so it is fun to see what the next production will come up with. Michael McGraw has now brought his version of the classic to the Camarillo Skyway Playhouse, running through 10 July 2016.

Review - Flying H Does Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman

Pillowman 80Review-
Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman is considered by some to be one of the most provocative plays written in the last quarter century.  Credited as being the supreme example of what almost is its own genre, Horror Comedy, the play is multi-dimensional, thought-provoking, intense, and open to a wide range of interpretation. By all counts it is quite dark; but very funny, even in a non-dark sort of way.

Review - David Hare’s Skylight Gets masterful treatment at Ojai Art Center Theatre

Cast Buddy Wilds Noah Terry Anna Kotula Photo by Tom MooreReview-
David Hare’s Skylight is an excellent play, one of the best plays written in the last 50 years. Sharply written, multi-layered, beautifully constructed, engaging, and timely, it is a good-humored, entertaining, highly-charged emotional rollercoaster ride of a play.

Director Steve Grumette does us a great favor bringing it to the 805 and giving us a well-crafted professional production with scintillating acting from Anna Kotula as Kyra Hollis and Noah Terry as Edward Sargeant, with an admirable debut from Buddy Wilds as the son, Tom Sargeant.

The other good news is that the Ojai Art Center Theatre has lowered its ticket prices for this season.

6 summer sides you never knew you could grill

What image does the word "grilling" bring to mind? Do you envision thick, juicy burgers or steaks? What about sauce-slathered chicken breasts sizzling over coals? Cooking out is one of the great joys of warm weather, but if you leave side dishes out of your grilling plans - or stick with cold sides like salads - you're missing out on some great flavors.

MINAN WONG: A Tale Of Two Cities

a14 copy

This season I decided not to attend any of the shows for fashion week in Los Angeles, mainly because I feel Los Angeles is still trying to define themselves in this industry (a story for another time), and it can be a little chaotic getting through some of the hype.  Anyhow, my mind was set… that is until Rhonda Hill from Edgexpo suggested that we attend one day of shows for FWLA because the designers "looked to be progressive" for that day. Well that was enough for me to take another look at the designers who were presenting their collections. There was one particular designer’s collection I had to see in person after watching their video from New York Fashion Week on the Runway and that designer was Mimi Wong whose brand is called Minan Wong.
