Review
Some might argue that Monday nights are a tough sell. I completely disagree. That’s the time you get to see the world as it really is, without make up, hung over from the mess it made during the weekend. Especially walking down Sunset Boulevard.

Only one element to be concerned with- ELEMENT COFFEE

element1

It's always fun driving around Old Town Camarillo and seeing the classic design of the streets mixed with the new businesses and boutiques. Element Coffee is right at home on Ventura Blvd. in Camarillo, it is a great place to sit and relax. When we walked in it was late in the day and very mellow. We enjoy small businesses and family owned restaurants because they are not tied down by a corporate office. Element can change their options and menu and they really listen to the customer to create a great drink specifically for you.

Buffalo Records

br6

Buffalo Records finds its new home in a white adobe building topped with a Spanish-style roof. When you enter the record retailer nestled in residential Ventura, you may catch a slight, musty aroma possibly emanating from the old vinyls. Flanking the walkway to the register are rows of boxes on the floor, filled with un-shelved "2 for $1" vinyls, the shop’s recession special.

What a Catch You’ll Find at Lure’s Fish House

LOGO-LURE copy

I will start out saying that it's really nice to have a quality seafood place in the 805. That's something Ventura County has definitely been lacking and as word gets out, I know Lure's Fish House will be the number one place people will go when they want seafood.

DESIGNER SHOWCASE: Vanessa Rivers

Recycled-Ruffle-Bikini-Blue-BlissVanessa Rivers, founder/designer for Happy Endingz® Eco Swimwear, grew up on an eco-ranch in Central California and attended college at UC Santa Barbara where she fell in love with surfing. The line's green concept was born out of Vanessa's passion for protecting the environment and her bikini's signature "butterfly cut" bottoms with minimal back coverage are inspired by the Hawaiian Islands. Despite having a celebrity lineage including father, singer Johnny Rivers, grandma, actress Debbie Reynolds, and aunt, Carrie Fisher, (aka Princess Leia), she has managed to stay grounded and dedicated to her goal of helping green become mainstream. Vanessa also spends her time teaching surf lessons when she is not busy designing swimwear.

Strike! And we’re not talking about baseball baby!

bowling2
“Yabba Dabba Doo” and “Lets Rock” would be the response of my bowling buddies Fred Flintstone and Al Bundy. The 805 offers a good variety of bowling alleys and they all have their perks. I’m sure most of you know, but for those of you who don’t… lace up those funny shoes and put those twinkle toes to work. Throughout Ventura and Oxnard there are three bowling alleys to choose from. Ventura offers Buena Lanes (located by Skating Plus), and Ventura Bowling Center downtown off of Thompson. Oxnard offers Wagon Wheel Bowling off of the 101 fwy. So let’s answer the main question that is on all our minds, YES!!! , all bowling alleys come with fully stocked bars and lounges. For those of you 21 and over, there is nothing wrong with warming up at the bar; bowling is a sport after all. For those of you under 21, I think they have soda machines. Now some people say bowling is like disco, dead. Well those people obviously haven’t listened to my playlist, because bowling is stronger and more diversified than ever. It’s the number place to take a date, regardless of the age range.

Toppers By The Sea

TIPS & TIDBITS
Wow is all that could be said by both Evan and I when we walked into the Toppers at Channel Islands, also known as Toppers by the Sea. Thundering and lightning, we ran inside to find a huge two story masterpiece with tons of windows to display the amazing view of the harbor. If you've ever eaten at Toppers Pizza Place before, you know each one is single story, has the basic benches, T.V.s, salad bar, etc. Well, Toppers by the Sea is definitely making a statement and redefining your idea of what this popular pizza place should look like. Your mouth will drop just like ours did in awe of what you walk into.

Carli's Bistro

CarlisBistroTucked away in Old Moorpark, off the beaten path, Carli's Bistro is found with a feel of a beach house; frayed bamboo looking umbrellas contributes to this feel on their outdoor front patio. I love how they have their patio in the front because they are right across the street from the AMTRACK train tracks and can catch that every once in awhile, as well as just be entertained from the people walking by. It's very low key and quaint so you get a feeling of "kick off your shoes and stay awhile" eating in the historic area; being in a rush is not what Old Moorpark is about.

La Super Rica

La Supra2

It was a classic case of June gloom today as my fiancé and I headed up the coast, on the 101 freeway, to La Super Rica in Santa Barbara. Despite the gloomy weather, there was nothing but smiles and excitement from not only us, but the other customers in anticipation of the delicious Mexican food. Only a 45 minute drive from our starting point of Newbury Park/Thousand Oaks, we arrived at 10:45 am, 15 minutes before La Super Rica opened. We snagged a parking spot right in front and got in line because one was already forming! We were soon followed in line by two more parties and 15 minutes after La Super Rica had opened, there was a mix of 15 people, from families to local workers on their lunch break, chowing down while a line continued out the door.

Artist Interview- WAV Resident Luce Patricolo

BlissfulorsLuce Patricolo, the Glass Alchemist

My interview with Luce Patricolo was unfortunately held to phone conversation and email. But I could tell from the brief communication, that Luce was an individual full of passion and life. When speaking of the WAV, Luce’s passion is felt though the computer screen. “The WAV’s intent and Chris Velasco’s dream is to keep artists in Ventura who have all but been driven away by lack of affordability, vanished endowments for the arts, and virtual risk of extinction within our current society. Raising the consciousness of Americans that art is essential to humanity and the feeding of ones soul. Where Europe has always been aware of the worth and contribution of the artists role in society, America, I feel is in need of an awakening of its value”.

Artist Interview- WAV Resident Catlin Harvey Blair

DSC 4678Catlin Harvey Blair: The Interconnectedness of Art and Nature
Catlin Harvey Blair is a sculpture artist and jewelry designer who grew up right here in the 805 in Santa Barbara, California. Growing up in a positive family that raised her with the aesthetic of seeing beauty as it naturally exists in the world, she found her artistic niche early. She loves to put things found in nature in a different context to make them truly seen. “Some people look at a stick and just see a stick, but it’s more than just a stick, it’s this beautiful part of nature that fits in perfectly with its environment,“ says Catlin.
