California's Central Coast Wine

IMG 7039
Throughout California, there are many wine appellations or AVA's. Each is broken down by distinctions like climate and soil that produce both growing and wine differentiation's. The French word terroir will not be used because I do not speak French and, well, mainly for fear of civil unrest among the hard-core. Many of the regions are known to produce and specialize in different wines. The Central Coast includes over 30 different AVA's (American Viticulture Areas). Having some familiarity with these regions, there are key distinctions that often can be blanketed with the term "Central Coast."

The Unknown Santa Barbara

intro
(Recently Re-Uploaded)

The movie "Sideways" seems to be a beaten dead horse amongst the wine industry, so much so, it could be called the "S-word." They say perception is reality and many people's knowledge base sometimes falls on a simple movie. As exasperated as the discussions might be, the impact has been a lasting one. A well known winemaker called it the "Sideways bump." The Santa Barbara region was heavily blessed with a lot of wine travelers seeking the much talked about Pinot Noir with cash in hand. While Santa Barbara county may produce some of the best Pinot Noir in the country, that I consume by the barrel, there is much more to the area than Pinot Noir.

Be Good to Yourself

One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that we don’t have time or money to take better care of ourselves.  Somehow we have been lead to believe that if we carve out an hour for ourselves each day to exercise or if we buy a few extra pieces of produce each week, that we’re being selfish.  But, think of all that you could accomplish if you were living a healthy and vibrant lifestyle.  Begin your journey—be good to yourself!

Finding a New Beginning

Finding a New Beginning

A stay-at-home mom turned healthcare provider shares inspiration for realizing your dreams later than you expected!

When Corine Riedell was just 21 years old she was already a stay at home mother of 3.   She had completed high school early through independent study and had quickly moved into the adult responsibilities that come along with child rearing, namely putting other’s needs before your own. But putting her children’s upbringing first didn’t mean putting off her own career goals and personal aspirations. Her peers were off at college or enjoying the freedom of being an adult with the lack of responsibilities living at “home” provides. Even though Corine didn’t have either luxury she also didn’t feel she was missing out on anything that couldn’t’ wait. She tucked her dreams away for later and enjoyed her kids while they were young.

The Bees Knees
Honey isn’t only a term of endearment, or a sweetener... it’s also found in Honey Girl Organics skincare. The origin of this company is a true love story: Anthony Maxfield started keeping bees as a hobby on the North Shore of Oahu Hawaii, and when his wife, Gwen noticed how smooth his hands had become she asked if he could make some lotion.
And he did (good man)! And it worked (smart woman)!

Discover The Undiscovered - Cimarone

Discover The Undiscovered - Cimarone
If you've had the pleasure of touring Santa Barbara's wine country, you’ve likely visited some combination of the Santa Maria Valley, the Foxen Trail, Los Olivos, the Sta Rita Hills, the downtown "funk-zone," or the Santa Ynez Valley. These fantastic wine trails are posted clearly on most wine maps. But not all of the great spots are included on the maps for mainstream wine travelers to visit, and not all spots are open to the public. Santa Barbara’s wine business has grown and evolved over the years, and now includes some recent discoveries and new AVA's. One of the younger AVA's in California, and more specifically Santa Barbara County, is Happy Canyon, which officially earned its AVA designation in 2009.

Is the 805 Ready for a Regional Arts Council?

1437Is the 805 Ready for a Regional Arts Council?

The 805 area has the critical mass in terms of artists, arts institutions, and population of a major city. It is a culturally contiguous region with supporting wine, restaurant, and film industries, plus museum, transportation, and tourist infrastructure. It has a score of small towns and centers facing similar core economic re-vitalization and cultural problems, including tight city  budgets and increasing infrastructure costs. Does it make sense to keep pursuing a balkanized arts and culture strategy with each town duplicating vital marketing, staffing, and organizational costs?  Is it time for a regional approach instead?

Hear What You’ve Been Missing

hearing loss
In a plugged-in culture, we lack education on the prevention
and early intervention of hearing loss.
Hearing loss is serious business. After all, hearing is one of our most important senses – keeping us safe and empowering us to communicate with the world around us. Imagine not being able to hear a car coming from around the corner as you cross the street. What if you couldn’t hear a knock at the door, a smoke detector, your kitchen timer or the phone ring - much less the person on the other end? We really take this sense for granted and aren’t taught to protect it. What if we were taught to prevent hearing loss the way we try to prevent cancer, diabetes or heart disease? It's unlikely that you will die of hearing loss, but you may be as surprised as I to learn of the incredibly emotional toll hearing loss can take. Two experienced doctors of audiology – hearing and balance specialists – taught me just how serious, and often preventable, hearing loss can be.

Thousand Oaks Physician Sheds Light on Cancer Risk to Acid Reflux Sufferers

Many of the estimated 25 million Americans who suffer from daily symptoms of acid reflux, also referred to as heartburn or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) find taking medications provide much needed relief. However, the use of medications for acid reflux does not eliminate the most significant risk affiliated with GERD: the potential for esophageal cancer – the fastest growing cancer in the United States.

Arts Candidates Sweep Ventura City Council Elections

Cheryl Heitmann, Executive Director of the Ventura Music Festival, top vote-getter in Ventura City Council elections.
Pro-arts candidates sweep the recent Ventura City Council elections by overwhelming margins, with the top vote count going to the director of an arts non-profit, affirming the ongoing vigor and electoral strength of the arts in Ventura.  It was an instructive test, as the “arts slate” crossed party lines and was not the slate supported by any of the official party in Ventura.
